Linux overtakes Mac OS?
Hewlett-Packard has started shipping its first laptop in the future pre-installed with Linux.
The Compaq nx5000 was revealed in the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo throughout a keynote by HP V . P . of Linux, Martin Fink.
“This is actually the year that Linux overtakes the Mac around the desktop, and perhaps my laptop can help accelerate that,” Fink stated.
One analyst at IDC thinks this has happened. “Linux taken the amount two place as desktop operating-system in 2003,” stated IDC analyst Dan Kusnetzky inside a recent interview.
By 2007 IDC estimations that Linux may have 6 percent from the desktop market when it comes to models, Kusnetzky stated.
Beginning at $1,140, the nx5000 ships with either Intel’s Celeron or Pentium processors, a 15-inch screen, and between 30GB and 60GB of storage. The Linux version ships with Novell Corporation.’s Suse Linux 9.1 and also the OpenOffice productivity suite.
